December 12th, 2009Southwater II (Home) - JCC Round 2 - Cup
Result: 4 - 1 (Won)
Scorers: Bannister 2, Bartlett, Lee
A sticky pitch did not make for a great game at the common on Saturday but we did enough to progress and set up a QF against Ifield Edwards. We started a little slowly with Southwater missing an early header and it was nip and tuck early on, especially after a lengthy break for a Kevern head injury (unfortunately he was forced off in the first 10 minutes). Whenever we got it down we looked dangerous and a spell of possession involving Tops, Baker and Irvine eventually created space for Lee on the edge of the box and he smashed home for 1 nil. We were on top now and Baker released Campo who shot wide when 1v1, Ranson then blazed over after nice work from Campo and Lee’s cross was headed wide by an unmarked Campo (we think the hair obscured the cygnet’s vision as the ball was in flight). Meanwhile the only real problem the other end was from set plays and their number 9 fell over every time anyone was within 3 yards of him! Baker then played a lovely through ball to Campo, this time there was no mistake as he beat the keeper for 2 nil. Southwater caused a few problems from set plays but it remained 2-0 at half time.
We started the 2nd half asleep and Southwater pressed forward, their centre mid crashing a 25 yarder against the post before striker stuck away the rebound, this woke us up and Mullen began dominating the 50-50s in the middle, with Baker picking some nice passes and Campo causing their left back loads of problems. Campo played in Ranson who shot over but then Baker released Irvine through and he was felled in the box…penalty. Lee stepped up but his effort was saved by their keeper… fines later! Fugl’s came into the fray and caused their right back problems immediately, winning a corner after a jinking run. Fugl took it himself and Tops crashed home a header from 6 yards, 3-1. To their credit Southwater kept going and a fierce 25 yarder was tipped over by Ellison. A good run down the left from Fugl created space and he crossed back post for Campo to ghost in unmarked and head home for 4-1. Campo then got on the end of a Ranson cross for 5-1 but it was ruled out by a highly dubious offside flag. Shaldoum header a Fugl corner wide from 5 yards and Bottle Top somehow missed from 4 yards before Campo jinked past 3 defenders but a fine save by their keeper denied him his hatrick. Campo was MoM after 2 goals and an all round impressive display on the wing.
