April 24th, 2010Felbridge (away) - Division 2
Result: 3 - 2 (Won)
Scorers: Fugl, Arnoux, Baker
The reserves signed off their season with a well deserved 3-2 win in an entertaining game at Felbridge. The hosts started brightly but were kept at bay by a smart early save from keeper Matt Batcholer, who was excellent on the day and stepped up superbly from the 5ths at extremely short notice. We responded well to the early pressure with Fugl, Campo and Keane going close or being denied by the keeper. Arnoux was excellent up top and troubled Felbridge all afternoon and after he won a long ball, he played in Fugl who slotted home for 1 nil. Felbridge responded and only a superb last ditch tackle by Mullen denied them a 1 v 1. Campo and Arnoux then combined to put Baker in space on the edge of the box, unbelievably Baker actually managed to keep a shot down, scuffing an 18 yarder that dribbled into the corner for 2-0 for his first goal for the club. Felbridge responded again and their 10 got away from a static Lindfield backline and held off Chilmaid to make it 2-1 at halftime.
Second half we were much the better side with Fugl and Godsmark causing problems on the flanks. We played some lovely football, Fugl and Arnoux both set up golden chances for Keane who hit the bar with one and the post with the other. Fugl then dazzled 3 defenders and curled a wonderful effort against the far post. Felbridge then struck the post themselves with a curling strike from a tight angle. Arnoux struck just wide for us and it looked like it could be one of those days as some terrible defending saw Shaldoum allowed one striker to turn and feed the other who got away from a hanging Mullen to make it 2-2, somewhat against the run of play. We responded superbly with the goal of the game moments later; Chilmaid found Campo who played in Godsmark down the right, he set Arnoux away who beat the last defender and thundered a right-footed strike into the bottom corner. Campo released Fugl who missed a 1v1 before Arnoux and Fugl combined to set up Keane who was denied from 12 yards as their keeper tipped his strike onto the woodwork. Batcholer produced a great save from a dipping free kick in the last minute to earn the reserves a respectable 6th place in the league having lost 5 players from last season's promotion winning squad. MoM went to Arnoux who was again excellent with a goal and 2 assists.
The reserve team should be proud of what they have achieved this year; recording the clubs highest ever league finish for a Lindfield 2nd team and reaching a cup final. If we can keep this young squad (At 27 I was 5 years older than anyone else in the side and the average age was 19) together then I am sure we will in the mix for some trophies next season. Well done to all involved for a good season and see you all Friday night for curry!!!
