March 23rd, 2010Newick - Junior Charity Cup Final - Cup
Result: 2 - 0 (Lost)
A very disappointing end to a good cup run for the reserves. All the damage was done first half as the occasion got to us and we were 2nd best all over the pitch. A healthy crowd of over 200 watched the match and it was one way traffic first half. Newick were more up for it in the challenge and played some nice football through the first half. On 10 minutes their right winger got in and crossed for their striker at the back post, Ellison produced a wonderful save to deny him and then Ashdown deflected the follow up onto the cross bar… we had been warned. Unfortunately we didn’t heed it and Newick’s movement opened us up again as the forward went through to score. It got worse 10 minutes later as having successfully defender a number of corners we let their striker have a free header back post which he directed across goal for their centre mid to convert. There was plenty of commitment from both sides first half but Newick continued to be half a yard quicker and saw out the half for 2-0 at the break.
We made more of a contest of it 2nd half and were the better side for 20 minutes after half time, forcing Newick back. Despite the pressure and us winning most of the 50-50s in midfield in this period, Newick’s back 4 were excellent and we only really threatened from set pieces with two half chances from a string of six 2nd half corners. Manager Batts rang the changes 2nd half to try and get us back into the game but shortly after making our 3 subs, Shaldoum pulled a hamstring as was on one leg for the rest of the game which didn’t help. The boys battled on well with Irvine and Shaldoum having shots just wide and over respectively but Newick held firm for a deserved win.
Irvine was the Swan’s MoM for his fantastic work rate through the 90. In all honesty we had stage fright first half and that was when the damage was done. 2nd half was 50-50 but credit to Newick who took full advantage of our first half failings and were deserved winners. Despite the performance, the young reserve team side should be proud of reaching the final (the highest level cup final ever reached by a Lindfield 2nd team) and it will stand the boys in good stead for another cup run next year. Thanks to everyone who came to cheer us on, sorry we couldn’t perform a bit better!! Let’s push on with the last 6 league games and get a top half finish.
