AFC Grinstead (Home) - Division 2
Result: 5 - 2 (Won)

Scorers: Bannister, Chilmaid, Irvine, Lee, McDona

The reserves bounced back from last week’s disappointment at Newick by knocking AFC off the top of the league, despite leading scorer Kevern being suspended. We started well, snapping into tackles and winning most of the 50-50s. Budgen was causing their left back loads of problems and he found MacDonald who set up Irvine but somehow the keeper got across to deny him with a point blank save. Campo and MacDonald both went close before a corner was half clear by AFC, Lee found Chilmaid who looked up and smashed a 40 yarder goal ward, it was a good hit straight at the keeper and he fumbled it into the corner for a rather fortuitous lead! AFC responded will Ellison denying their hulking centre forward before a mix up at the back allowed him in to smash home from 14 yards. We responded well with Campo and Baker linking up to release MacDonald, he sprinted clear and shot past the keeper for 2-1. We then got a rather lucky penalty as the ball bounced up and hit one of their lads on the arm, Campo placed his spot kick into the bottom corner but their keeper pulled off a superb save. Campo was not to be denied though and curled home from 15 yards minutes later after a jinking run.

AFC came out fired up for the second half and brought on their own Rory Delap to launch high balls into the area. Despite giving away high throughout the side (apart from Shaldoum!) we defended admirable against the long throws and corners. Chilmaid, Shaldoum, Lee and Ashdown were excellent at the back with Mullen and Baker scrapping for everything in the middle in a fiery second half. Following a string of AFC corners, Ellison claimed the last one well and launched a quick counter attack; MacDonald and Chaz combined to release Irvine who twisted and turned in box before curling a left footer into the far corner. AFC then got a rather lucky goal of their own, a clear foul in midfield was seen by the ref who booked their player after they went on to score?!?! AFC pressed forward, trying to get back into the game but a wonderful 60 yard run from Lee, ended with him playing a 1-2 with MacDonald and cooling slotting home for the goal of the game. A cracking win and finding consistency is the key now for the young reserve team outfit. MoM for went to youngster Lee for an excellent all round performance, made even more so by the fact he was out of position.
